ABOUT ROLAND PUCCETTI
Roland Puccetti was a great thinker, a world traveler and a man of many talents. Though born in Oak Park, Illinois, (1924) he lived abroad for most of his life; Paris, Beirut, Toronto, Barcelona, Halifax and even a brief stint in Tahiti, until he was politely asked by the French government to leave, for having no visible means of employment.
In his youth, he was a competitive swimmer and an Illinois fencing champion and served in the US Army before beginning his life of travel and study abroad. He completed his doctorate in Philosophy at La Sorbonne University, France in early 1950’s.
Roland wrote The Death of the Führer in 1971 (published in 1972), the year he moved from Singapore with his family, to become Chair of the Philosophy department at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. His then-wife, Jeanne, typed the novel as Roland did not embrace typewriting until well into the 1980’s. Every week, he would give Jeanne a new set of hand-written pages to type—which caused no end of frustration as she did not like being kept in suspense with the story’s progress.
The novel draws upon many of Roland’s interests—World War II history, his knowledge of European culture, (he spoke fluent French and Spanish, and he could manage quite well in both Italian and Arabic), and his empathy towards the classic anti-hero protagonist. Importantly, the book signaled his burgeoning interest in neuroscience and the meaning of “self”, a subject that he would study in the latter years of his academic career. His second novel, The Trial of John and Henry Norton (1973, Hutchinson & Co. Publishing Ltd) was a court-room drama about a crime that also draws upon the definition of self. No doubt Roland would have been chuffed with the re-publication of his novel although he would have found current world politics even more fantastical than his story.
